Beechworth is town that creeps up on you and before you know it, you are well and truly taken in for all that it offers. The Beechworth mountain bike park is no different – being an ‘oldie, but a goodie’ if you will.
Tucked away in Victoria’s High Country, Beechworth Mountain Bike Park delivers a unique mix of technical granite, fast-flowing singletrack, and small-town charm.
From the unsanctioned hand-cut trails built over 30 years ago, to the local club-led trail building and advocacy. This community has been able to grow the trail network into a fixture for locals and visitors, with quality signage, mapping and facilities to help attract mountain bike tourists.
With both the Beechworth mtb park as well as the Indigo Epic, (and various gravel and road cycling options), Beechworth is a fast becoming a cycle tourism destination, with plenty to offer, both on and off the bike.

Where is Beechworth Mountain Bike Park?
The Beechworth Mountain Bike Park sits on Alma Road, just a few minutes from the town centre. There is a bike path that takes you almost all the way to the Alma Rd carpark, making it easy to access, if you are staying in town
Beechworth itself is about three hours from Melbourne, making it an ideal weekend escape or a wider North East Vic mountain biking road trip. With Bright, Yackandandah, and Mount Beauty all within an hour’s drive, it’s perfectly placed for riders exploring the region’s growing network of singletrack.
The main trailhead has parking, trail map, shelter and toilets, and access to several loop options that can be linked together for longer rides. Trails are well-signed and maintained by the local Beechworth Chain Gang MTB Club, who have helped build a strong local riding community.

Trail Overview
Beechworth Mountain Bike Park features around 17 kilometres of singletrack that wind through native bush and granite boulder fields. The terrain has a natural, hand-built feel, with many sections being rocky and rooty technical trail, that keep things interesting. Riders can choose from a mix of green, blue, and black trails, most of which can be linked together into a satisfying circuit.
The surface varies from hard-packed dirt to loose, small granite boulders and exposed rock slabs. It’s not a machine-made flow trail like you’d find at Bright’s Mystic MTB Park — instead, Beechworth rewards line choice, bike handling and technical skills. Dotted throughout are various skill features such and man-made roll overs, skinnys, see-saws and drop offs.

Must-Ride Trails
One of the best ways to experience Beechworth is to loop together a few key trails that highlight the park’s variety. The park seems to be designed to allow for various trail combinations that either keep you with in the green Loop or connect with a number of intermediate outlying trails that eventually funnel you down to the lower carpark for some self-shuttles or grind it out on the ‘Need Pizza’ trail back to the main carpark.
Some standouts include ‘Secret Track’ which is graded intermediate for a super techy granite and root manoeuvring trail . It flows well for the amount of features you need to navigate, but worth it for the challenge.
‘Rusty Stuff’ and the impressively named ‘Doctor Hong’s Prune Candy’ is also another granite boulder dodging trail, that links together at the edge of the park.
In fact, expect a whole lot of technical riding at Beechworth, but in a good way. The trails flow, but given the environment, you need to be locked in on your lines and handling. Even the Green Loop has a good smattering of tech trail features.

Skill Level and Ride Style
Most of the Beechworth MTB trails sit in the intermediate range, though there are enough technical rock sections to keep advanced riders entertained. This includes the appropriately named Short Course Downhill Track, Jumps Track and Don’t Be a Hero
Beginners can stick to the green-rated loops near the trailhead, but riders should expect a natural, sometimes loose surface throughout the park. It’s a cross-country and trail rider’s playground rather than a downhill or jump park — and those comfortable with technical climbing and short, rocky descents will get the most out of it.
Beechworth Mountain Bike Park – Facilities and Access
Facilities at the park are basic, but sufficient for a half-day or full-day session. There’s parking at the trailhead, with toilets (portable) at the Alma Road carpark, or located in town, just a few minutes away.
Beechworth has several bike-friendly cafes and a local bike shop for repairs or basic gear needs and a famously rider friendly brewery. The trails are open year-round, but it’s worth checking Trailforks or the Beechworth Chain Gang’s social pages for any temporary closures or maintenance updates.
When to Ride
Beechworth’s elevation and exposed granite make it a park that rides best in spring and autumn. During summer, temperatures can climb quickly, so early morning rides are recommended. In winter, the trails can get damp but generally remain rideable and drain well — just watch for slippery rock surfaces and roots, after the rain.
Beechworth MTB Park: Nearby Trails and MTB Links
One of the best things about riding in Beechworth is how well it connects to other High Country MTB destinations. The Yackandandah MTB Trails are linked via a machine cut flow trail, that forms part of the Indigo Epic Trail — a purpose-built 56 km route between Beechworth and Yackandandah. It’s an excellent day ride for experienced riders looking to make an adventure of it.
Further afield, Bright’s Mystic MTB Park offers lift-access gravity trails and jump lines, while Mount Beauty MTB Park provides classic alpine singletrack and longer climbs. Combined, these make up one of Australia’s best clusters of mountain bike park destinations.
Where to Stay
Beechworth has plenty of accommodation options that cater to riders. The local caravan park and several motels offer bike storage, while boutique B&Bs and cottages provide a comfortable base for a weekend of riding. Many riders also camp nearby or base themselves in Bright, where a day trip to ride the Beechworth MTB park or the Indigo Epic is in easy reach.

Food, Drink, and Local Highlights
After a morning on the trails, try Tiny and/or Project 49 – both are great for refuelling with coffee. Project 49 also offer excellent food. For something more substantial, Bridge Road Brewers is a must-visit. Their craft beer, woodfired pizzas, and laid-back beer garden make it the unofficial après-ride spot in town.
The recent additional of Stillwater Sauna on Lake Sambell is perfect for rider weary legs. Book an hour session and experience some hot and cold therapy, before your trip to the brewery.
Beechworth’s heritage streets, old stone buildings, and local produce markets also add plenty to the weekend experience, even off the bike.

Insider Tips
Bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months. While the park isn’t large, the climbs can be punchy and the granite terrain tends to reflect heat. Tyre choice matters here — something with decent sidewall protection and grip on rock will make a big difference. If you’ve got time, connect your ride with Yackandandah or plan a High Country MTB circuit over a few days.
Why Ride Beechworth Mountain Bike Park
Beechworth Mountain Bike Park isn’t the biggest or most polished trail network in Victoria, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a park that rewards technical skill, flow, and exploration. The combination of granite, eucalyptus and pine forest, and historic surrounds, creates a distinctly Australian riding experience. Add in the local food, beer, and community vibe, and you’ve got a destination that’s well worth adding to your Victorian mountain bike destination list.
